One of the funniest vids on youtube is the Charlie the Unicorn series. Michele and I have played around for a while with the idea of costuming as the unicorns Blue and Pink. She sent me a few links with crocheted unicorn hats to inspire me to get started. I'm going to try to get them done in time for Con on the Cob. Hopefully, Neil will consent to being Charlie. He's had alot of practice putting up with our "we're on a bridge, Charlie" since he unknowingly named his character Charley in our Firefly rpg.
The costumes won't be exact replicas of Blue and Pink. Instead, we'll be wearing unicorn hats and sweatshirts in the appropriate colors.
The first step to making the hats was finding yarn in the correct colors. Armed with a few printed out pics, I headed over to JoAnn's. There is a horrifyingly large variety of pink and light blue yarn. After much comparision and cosultation with random sales people and Michele via cellphone photos, I went with Vanna's Choice Baby yarn in Bluebell and Vanna's Choice in pink and white. The unicorns' horns are white. Finding the right colors was more challenging because I wanted to use the same brand for all the colors. That way, the hats will be as identical as possible. Different brands of yarn have different textures and width, even if they are labeled as having the same weight.
If Neil agrees to be Charlie, I'll make his hat a light gray.
The base to the hats is very simple, its just the basic hat pattern I make. The horn should be very easy, too. Just a spiral cone. Mane will be easy, too. Just sewing on bits of yarn down the center of the hat. Tricky bit will be the ears. That's going to take a bit of experimenting with.
